Let me introduce myself to some and reintroduce myself to others. I'm Dr. Linda G Ubeku. I was born in the West End of Cincinnati, Ohio in the late 1950s and grew up in Avondale, part of the inner city. Those of us born between 1946 and 1962—often called Baby Boomers—represent a significant portion of the population. The exact timing of my birth carried a particular, heavyweight relevance for African Americans coming of age in the wake of the Civil Rights Movement.

During a national crisis, I and other African American Boomers were given an invitation to be seated. Before we ever arrived for the moment, the invitation was given, the seat and table were prepared. Little did I know that this invitation would lead me to peer into an ancient authority conferred upon everyday citizens.
